The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
